Fear the Beginning You Never Allow
It’s winter here in Canada and the end of the year is upon us. Like the changing of each season and the passing of each year, it’s also time for the act of shedding your identity.
You become what you believe yourself to be. Many people hold onto self-limiting labels, saying things like, “I’m not a coder, I’m not a leader, I’m not good on stage.” These are just excuses. Like a butterfly emerging from its chrysalis, you can shed your old limiting identity and create a new one. Top performers understand this. They take action before they feel ready, which allows them to grow exponentially, while others remain stuck, doubting themselves and disliking what they see in the mirror.

I’ve experienced this. At different times in my life, I’ve taken on different identities at different stages of my life and career. Was I great at all of them? No. Some fit better than others. But each time I let go of an old identity, I gained new skills and opportunities. Every major leap forward came after letting go of who I used to be. Your identity is constantly evolving, dying, and being reborn.
To apply this, ask yourself, “What identity am I holding onto that no longer serves me?” Write it down, and let it go. Over time, you’ll notice a new identity emerging, like spring after a harsh winter. You’ll never feel fully ready to let go of the old or worthy of the new, but don’t fear endings; they’re inevitable. Instead, fear the beginnings you never allow.
Spring doesn’t wait for winter’s permission, and neither should you.
I’ll be back with more next week.
Stay tuned.
