Default, Opposite & Hybrid | Life

Pause!

The brain is designed to minimize decision-making by relying on default reactions based on past experiences stored in the subconscious. These automatic responses are often helpful, such as recognizing danger and reacting appropriately. However, in some cases, default reactions can work against us, like losing your temper easily.

To manage such situations, the first step is to become aware of how you’re feeling. When triggered, there’s a brief moment before you react—this is your opportunity to pause. Take five seconds to reflect before responding. During this pause, consider reacting in the opposite way to your default. For example, if you feel like yelling, think about how you can respond with kindness instead.

Additionally, you can explore a third option: a hybrid response. This involves combining elements of your default reaction and its opposite, or considering how someone with your values and maturity would respond. By pausing and choosing between these three approaches—default, opposite, or hybrid—you can respond thoughtfully and handle situations more effectively.

I’ll be back with more next week.

Stay tuned.
