Leadership is NOT a reward!
You walk into a driver’s education class, eager to get behind the wheel. You’ve never driven before, but you’re excited about the freedom and independence that comes with a license. The instructor, sensing your enthusiasm, hands you a driver’s license on the spot. No tests, no practice, no feedback—just a piece of paper granting you permission to hit the road.
Your lack of skill doesn’t just put you at risk—it endangers everyone around you.
Leadership is no different.
Leadership is not a reward.
Too often, people are handed the metaphorical “license” to lead without the necessary skills, preparation, experience, or self-awareness. They might have been in the organization for a long time or recognized for their strong individual contributions. Like a shiny new driver’s license—it can have serious consequences for both the leader and those they’re responsible for.

Just like an untrained driver can cause accidents, an unprepared leader can cause problems for the entire organization.
I’ll be back with more next week.
Stay tuned.
